After five Indian fishermen were injured, including two critically, in a firing incident by the Sri Lankan Navy near Delft Island on Tuesday, the ministry of external affairs (MEA) called in the country’s acting high commissioner in New Delhi and lodged a strong protest with the top diplomat, according to news agency PTI.

In response, India declared that using force is “not acceptable under any circumstances whatsoever.” Early this morning, the MEA said in a statement, “There was a reported firing incident by the Sri Lankan Navy during the capture of 13 Indian fishermen near Delft Island.” “The Jaffna Teaching Hospital is currently treating two of the 13 fishermen who were on board the fishing vessel after they suffered serious injuries,” the MEA continued.

About the Incident

It stated that three other fisherman were treated for minor injuries they sustained. The injured fisherman are receiving all the help they can from the Indian embassy in Jaffna, which has paid them a visit at the hospital to inquire about their well-being.

The Ministry of External Affairs received a strong protest about the event and called in the Sri Lankan acting high commissioner in New Delhi this morning, the MEA said. The Sri Lankan foreign ministry has also been notified of the issue by the Indian high commission in Colombo.
