Following an avalanche on Friday morning, 55 employees of the Border Roads Organization were buried beneath the snow.

An avalanche imprisoned workers in the high-altitude village of Mana in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, resulting in the deaths of at least four workers. On Friday, 55 employees of the Border Roads Organization were buried beneath the avalanche. Fifty workers were rescued from the snow, and the five that remained are being sought.

Between 5:30 and 6 a.m. on Friday, the avalanche struck the BRO camp, trapping the workers inside a shed and eight containers, the Army said.

In an effort to save the stranded workers, rescue crews have been fighting against frigid weather, blinding blizzard, and hazardous terrain ever since.

55 workers were trapped in the camp when a huge avalanche struck [two of the workers were on leave]. In the face of snow and cold temperatures, the Indian Army and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (IRBP) officers stationed there promptly began the rescue efforts, according to district magistrate Sandeep Tiwari of Chamoli.

Rescue efforts were hindered by rain and snowfall on Friday, and the operation was halted as night fell.

As the weather cleared on Saturday, helicopters were sent in to assist with the rescue effort. Since the roads are closed, a total of six helicopters have been sent out for evacuation, according to PRO Defence Dehradun. These consist of one civil helicopter, two cheetah helicopters from the Indian Air Force, and three cheetah helicopters from the Indian Army.
