Due to the alleged rape of a 26-year-old lady onboard a state transport vehicle that is parked at the Swargate bus stop, tensions in Pune are still rising. The offender has been identified by authorities as Dattatraya Ramdas Gade, 36, and a large search has been initiated to apprehend him. The defendant has a criminal past and has been free on bail since 2019. Gade was charged with larceny and chain snatching, according to the official from the Swargate police station.
What took place?
He called her ‘didi’ (sister) as he walked up to the woman who was waiting for a bus to Satara’s Phaltan. Pretextually, he led her to an empty ‘Shiv Shahi’ AC bus parked nearby on the crowded station grounds, claiming that the bus for Satara had reached a different platform. Then ran away.
The man persuaded her to board the bus despite her reluctance because there were no lights. He followed her inside, sexually assaulted her, and then ran away. Dattatraya Ramdas Gade was recognized by the police using CCTV footage.
Pune rape case: Some salient features
Maharashtra’s opposition parties have blasted Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ home department for not addressing the city of Pune’s escalating crime rate.In addition to replacing all 23 security officers at the Swargate bus station, Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has instructed MSRTC Managing Director Vivek Bhimanwar to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the submission and to provide a thorough report within seven days.
Suo motu cognizance of the incidence has been taken by the National Commission for Women, which has called on Maharashtra authorities to act immediately.
Ajit Pawar, the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra, called the act “extremely shameful, painful, and infuriating” and directed the Pune Police Commissioner to make sure the perpetrator is arrested “immediately.” Devendra Fadnavis, the chief minister, has also taken the situation seriously and instructed the police to take all necessary actions to ensure that the culprit receives the most severe penalty possible.
