National indignation was sparked by Sanjay Roy’s historic conviction for the horrific rape and killing of a junior physician at RG Kar Medical College. In a swift trial, police volunteer Sanjay Roy was found guilty on Saturday of raping and killing a junior physician at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

The crime caused widespread indignation over the lack of safety for women. Anirban Das, the Sealdah court’s extra district and sessions judge, handed down the verdict 57 days after the in-camera trial began on November 12.

Doctors took weeks off work to demand justice for the trainee doctor and improved security at public hospitals after her body was discovered in a classroom at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. After being taken into custody for the crime, Sanjay Roy claimed in November that he was “completely innocent” and that the case was being manufactured.

A 28-year-old postgraduate medical student was allegedly raped and killed on August 9; her lifeless body was found in a hospital seminar room. The following day, Sanjay Roy, a Kolkata Police civic volunteer, was taken into custody. Although investigators said he acted alone, the victim’s relatives and groups of junior doctors feared a larger conspiracy. The crime sent shockwaves across the nation, triggering protests over workplace safety for medical professionals.

By Saturday morning, an air of quiet tension had descended over the usually chaotic court complex. Groups of lawyers gathered in hushed discussions, their words laced with a mix of hope and scepticism The tense ambiance of the court grounds was reflected in Sealdah’s streets outside. The Sealdah court complex has seen a huge increase in security, with Kolkata Police building several barricades to regulate entrance and guarantee everyone’s safety.

Officers in uniform were clearly visible surrounding the court by Saturday morning as officials got ready for the anticipated influx of people. As a prison van transporting Roy into the court grounds, demonstrators gathered outside and called for the harshest sentence possible for him.

Koushik Maity, a leader of the Bengali group “Bangla Pokkha, stated that he must receive the harshest sentence possible because it should establish a precedent. Beginning in late August, the trial took place in a keenly watched courtroom behind closed doors.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has presented evidence, such as CCTV footage and Roy’s proximity to the crime site, to support its request for the heaviest punishment possible for Roy. The victim’s parents, however, have frequently questioned how comprehensive the inquiry was.

“This couldn’t have been accomplished by one person alone. To find the whole truth, we want a more thorough investigation,” the victim’s parents said. The Junior Doctors’ Front (JDF) has organized a demonstration at the court complex on Saturday at 2:00 PM to join the growing chorus of voices calling for justice.

Three additional medical associations, including Nurses Unity Forum and the Medical Service Center, will join them. According to a JDF representative, “this is not just about justice for one of us.” Healthcare services were momentarily halted when junior doctors in the state went on strike in response to the August 9 crime. Currently detained at Presidency Jail, Sanjay Roy has insisted on his innocence and that he is being set up.
