Kannada star Ranya Rao was detained at the Kempegowda International Airport of Bengaluru on Monday night on allegations of smuggling gold after she was allegedly discovered transporting 14.8 kg of gold from Dubai to India.
Stepdaughter of Director General of Police
Ranya Rao, who is the stepdaughter of Director General of Police (Police Housing Corporation) Ramachandra Rao, was arrested by Directorate of Revenue Intelligence personnel, says a news agency ANI report.
The following day, she appeared before a court for economic offenses and was placed under judicial imprisonment for 14 days.
How was Ranya Rao arrested by the authorities?
Ranya Rao was traveling on an Emirates flight from Dubai to Bengaluru when she was arrested. Because of how frequently she visited Dubai, she was not well known, but a news agency PTI report claims that the authorities had a targeted operation to arrest her after discovering that she had visited the city four times in 15 days, which increased their suspicions.

According to the officials, Ranya Rao was found in possession of up to 14.8 kg of gold, which they claim was being unlawfully imported into India. But when questioned, Rao claimed that she was in Dubai for business, according to the ANI report.
Ranya Rao’s acting career began in 2014 with the Sudeep-directed Kannada film Maanikya. She later moved outside Kannada cinema and made her Tamil debut in 2016 with Wagah, costarring alongside Vikram Prabhu.
